History
Department Description:
The Department of History is a part of the College of Humanities Education at the University of Sulaimani. It is located in Said Sadiq and is considered one of the important departments of the university. Our department believes that students are the most important pillars of the university, and we are always working on the implementation of this idea. Moreover, we place great emphasis on the students and strives to develop their historical skills, both locally and internationally. We are working diligently to provide them with the knowledge and skills needed for success.
Department Vision:
The Department of History’s vision is to cultivate students who are well-rounded and highly skilled, and who possess a deep understanding of historical stages and different levels. It considers the study of the territory, geography, and history of the Kurdish nation as a national strategy, and is committed to educating a conscious generation about its rich past. The department endeavors to produce graduates who are experts in the field of history and who are dedicated to serving the country.
Department Mission:
The main mission of the Department of History is to introduce students to the science of history and provide up-to-date information at all different stages. In addition, to prepare students to analyze historical events objectively and without bias, and to be able to make meaningful contributions in the field of history in all its branches. Students are awarded a bachelor’s degree in history after four years of study that are divided into eight semesters. Graduates of this department serve as history experts, historians, and history teachers in a scientific and efficient manner in society.
Learning Outcomes at Department:
In order to prepare and provide qualified students who can become bachelor’s graduates in history in general, the department makes every effort to provide all the necessary information and achieve these learning outcomes:
First, to provide the students with complete information by training them to become history teachers so that they take into account the educational principles of teaching history.
Second, encouraging students to recognize the importance of filling gaps and addressing shortcomings in the field of humanities education, and history in particular.
Third, preparing students to correct the distorted history of the Kurdish nation and Kurdish national characteristics that others have been trying to erase throughout the historical periods.
Fourth: Developing students’ abilities with the task of a national thought and a strategic policy for the future of the Kurdish people.
Fifth: inspiring to open a center related to research in the fields of Kurdish national security, religious coexistence, and ethnic coexistence.
Sixth: students having the ability to confront terrorism and foreign ideas of Kurdish history.
Seventh: Developing students’ ability to celebrate national holidays and keep great national memories.
Eighth: students will be able to organize conferences and panels related to national events and issues, and promote national awareness.
Department Study Methods:
The Department of History has implemented the Bologna Process in its teaching. The methods of study include theory, reports, and practical lessons. Assessments are conducted through two midterm exams, final exams, and writing essays and reports.
Language used in department:
The language of instruction at the History Department is Kurdish for all courses.
Duration of Studies:
The duration of study at the department is 4 academic years, divided into 8 semesters.
